Dr. Andrew Edwards
MD MBBS FRANZCOG COGU DDU

Andrew is an Obstetrician and Gynaecologist with subspecialist Certification in Obstetric and Gynaecological Ultrasound (COGU) awarded by RANZCOG.
After completing training Andrew began work as a consultant in the Fetal Diagnostic Unit at Monash Health. Here he developed a particular interest in fetal diagnosis, interventions, and therapies. In 2005, Andrew became the founding Director of the Victorian Fetal Therapy Service, and in 2006 performed the first fetoscopic laser ablation cure of Twin Transfusion Syndrome in Victoria.
From 2008-2014 Andrew was the Head of Perinatal Services at Monash Health, overseeing the Fetal Diagnostic and Maternal Fetal Medicine Units.
Andrew formed a research collaboration, with paediatric cardiologists and neonatologists from Melbourne and Germany, looking at the feasibility of cardiac catheterisation in the foetus. Presenting this work, Andrew won 3 ‘best research’ awards at local and international conferences, including the prestigious Best Abstract Award at the International Society of Ultrasound in Obstetrics and Gynaecology World Congress in Copenhagen.
Andrew is actively involved in several other research areas and has authored over 40 research papers in the medical literature. In 2016, Andrew was awarded a Doctor of Medicine higher degree by Monash University for his thesis titled ‘Fetal Therapy’ which included 11 original publication in the field of fetal therapy. Andrew has also been involved in several large multicentre gynaecological research projects including the Ovarian Health Study and the Prevention of Endometrial Cancer with Metformin trial.
In recent times Andrew has turned his attention towards the ultrasound diagnosis of endometriosis. The ability of advanced pelvic ultrasound techniques in detecting endometriosis is proven, but its implementation into the community is a huge challenge. After developing his own skills in this area, Andrew has become involved in education of sonographers and GPs with the aim of making ultrasound diagnosis of endometriosis widely available and appropriately utilised in the general community.
Currently, Andrew is an adjunct senior lecturer at the Hudson Institute, Monash University, and also works in the Fetal Diagnostic Service at Peninsula Health and in private practice.
